HP Keeps Making PCs: Now What?

Hewlett-Packard's reversion of its plan to drop its consumer division means we'll soon see new HP tablets and ultrabooks, and WebOS may find a national on additional devices, HP executives suggested in a late Thursday briefing after announcing earlier in the day that information technology will keep its PC division.

HP declared along August 18 that information technology was shutting down its WebOS division and power also underprice its Ain Systems Group responsible for creating HP PCs by either merchandising the division or spinning it off as its ain company.

But this calendar week, newly-minted CEO Million Marcus Whitman said the Microcomputer division would detain, after an exhaustive inspection. "HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger," Walt Whitman said in a press statement. Later, in a league Call with analysts, Whitman, PSG chief Todd Bradley, and company CFO Cathie Lesjak reaffirmed HP's commitment to making PCs.

H.P. is the largest computer producer in the world producing two PCs all second gear in its factories and shipping more than than 60 million PCs every year.

So what does the future have in store for HP's various gimmick categories including tablets, laptops and mobile devices? Here's what company executives had to say.

Tablets along Target

HP says IT will continue to produce the current Windows 7 tablet the party makes for enterprise customers, and will also develop a tablet lengthwise Windows 8. "We are sure going to exist there with Windows 8," Whitman said.

Earliest this month, rumors of an HP Windows 8 tablet surfaced when Taiwan-supported DigiTimes reported that H.P. planned to create a Windows 8 tablet PC in 2020. Then, on Monday, Fox News according that it had detected from sources within HP that the fellowship was busy testing Windows 8 happening HP TouchPad hardware.

During Thursday's call, Bradley interjected that HP's exploit with Microsoft in the tablet quad is "extraordinarily compelling." That, of row, is what you'd expect the head of PSG to say; nevertheless, it indicates HP wants to be a major musician in the tablet distance.

WebOS Future Murky

Windows 8 tablets are in and Crataegus oxycantha even use TouchPad hardware. But the future of a WebOS-based TouchPad or a TouchPad 2 is unclear. "We're going to make a determination about the long-lived full term hereafter of WebOS inside H.P. over the next couple of months,"Walt Whitman said. But Whitman's comments referred specifically to the WebOS software, not hardware.

So even if WebOS girdle in HP, it doesn't necessarily mean the fellowship will keep making WebOS smartphones and tablets. WebOS could be relegated to a software platform for printers and other business devices.

HP internal sources have reportedly told The Tutelar that Horsepower's WebOS team up expects the company to shut drink down WebOS operations in the near later.

Ultrabooks Expected

CEO Meg Walt Whitman

Bradley and Marcus Whitman did not spend much time discussing HP's time-honoured PC business of desktop and laptop PCs. Simply Horsepower May rich person something to announce in the coming weeks more or less its first raid ultrabooks, the new ultramobile laptop class created away Intel. "We'Ra very adjusted on having a persuasive suite in the the ultramobile infinite and you'll see that very soon," Bradley said.

To qualify As an ultrabook the device must be less than 0.8-inches soupy, have longer shelling life, and use up a Core 'i' Light Bridge central processor (until Ivy Bridge chips arrive in 2020). Ultrabooks are as wel hypothetic to be priced under $1000, merely not all ultrabooks meet that requirement.

Although HP originally wanted to tailspin off its Personal computer division, the company was still moving ahead with inexperient production plans so it's nary surprisal to hear Omar Nelson Bradle talk about an Horsepower ultrabook. Speculation about a hot HP ultramobile PC surfaced as recently American Samoa late Sep when an ad for HP ultrabooks started appearing in Google searches.

Cloud Role is Cloudy

In March, former HP CEO Leo Apotheker laid out the company's cloud services strategy that focused for the most part on initiative users and integrating personal online services such as social networking with work devices. Apotheker likewise wanted to create a new consumer app store for WebOS devices, and to tightly incorporate WebOS devices such American Samoa printers and PCs so they could easily communicate with all past and share information.

It's not clear how so much of that vision Whitman & Co. bequeath keep. Whatever HP does, a consumer level cloud scheme English hawthorn atomic number 4 involved as Marcus Whitman successful references to a strategy about the "open obnubilate." But HP is non ready to talk about specifics just sooner or later. "You will hear to a greater extent about our cloud strategy as we get into the future visual sense of HP," Whitman same.
